To give emphasis in teaching and research in emerging technologies the University of Calcutta  has  established a new Department of Applied Optics and Photonics in the year 2005.

The  new Department is created by carving out the existing infrastructure and expertise of the Optics  and  Optoelectronics division of the Department of Applied Physics of the University of Calcutta.
